A Heart of Gold Fundraiser

The Heart of Gold International Film Festival through Art with Heart is supported by some of the region’s most accomplished and generous artists and creators. This year Art with Heart has widened its scope to include all art forms, as well as some functional pieces, which has allowed artists to interpret the Festival themes as they wish and ensures Art with Heart has something for all. 2010 Art with Heart features oil, acrylic and watercolour works on canvas, ceramic/clay sculpture, prints, a wrought-iron piece, 3-D embroidery, hand-crafted jewellery, a hand-crafted wooden seat and mixed-media creations. Several pieces will be sold via Auction on Saturday 13th March in the Heritage Theatre following the Gold Heart Awards Ceremony, with other pieces available for purchase before and during the Festival. The Art with Heart works will be exhibited throughout the Heart of Gold International Film Festival at the Gympie Civic Centre. Valerie Wily

My work is about fun, laughter and stories. I make a multitude of ceramic pieces, small and large, mostly birds andHolding up the Sun - Valerie Willyanimals. They all relate to one another in my workshop from the moment their eyes are opened. I love to share this with other people who appreciate the interaction. I have been working in clay for over thirty years, fourteen years fulltime.

All the pieces are raku fired to 1050 degrees Centigrade which gives the characteristic black crackle. Many surprises occur in the kiln with this style of firing, which makes it unpredictable and exciting. Each piece is unique. I have about nine outlets for my work from Tasmania to Kuranda North Queensland. Working with clay is a passion for me and never a chore and I believe that passion gives my characters life. Artwork: Holding up the Sun (Raku fired ceramic and wood dowel, 415 x 330 x 330 mm)

Phil Willy

I enjoy the challenge of working with clay and creating a whimsical sculpture that will be enjoyed by others. My workPhil Willy - Art with Heart 3combines other media for interest, and particularly timber for warmth and good effect.

Combining fine woodworking skills increases the challenge to produce sculpture that is different and pleasing. Some of my sculptures have won prizes and others reside in good homes giving everyday enjoyment. I am currently represented at Maleny Artworks 07 5429 6566, or enquires at 07 5485 2219. Tables and cabinets can be seen at Main Street Gallery, 07 5478 5050, Montville, Qld.

Artwork: ACTION (430 x 350 lx 275 mm, Mixed media – fired ceramic, wood, recycled plastics and metal, acrylic paints).  Artist’s Statement: The theme for this sculpture is obviously linked to the Heart of Gold International Film Festival. It is about that moment of truth when the live action is captured by the camera, and who knows at that moment, what adventures the image will have during its ephemeral future.

Artwork: The Heart of Quixote (Oil on canvas (Framed), 40o x 450 mm (framed size). Artist’s statement: “The Heart of Quixote is a metaphor for the spirit of humanity rising above great adversity. My personal battle with secondary liver cancer led to the development of a series of work themed on Cervantes’ 16th century story about Don Quixote. Dissatisfied with the world he encountered, Quixote set out to change it by creating a more acceptable place. It is about choosing to respond in a negative or positive way to the hand life deals us.”

Dale Elwell

Early creative endeavours by Dale involved mostly wooden toys and bush furniture. Later metal-craft-work emerged, a legacy from an apprenticeship and career in engineering. Functional objects combining individual design features give a foundation to a consuming hobby. Much of this work is in wrought iron commissions for practical household items tailored to the tastes of the buyer. Time has seen more whimsical concepts being incorporated to the point where many current commissions have become more decorative in nature. Nature has become the inspiration behind the creation of a number of “creatures”. They derive from the farmyard, the woodlands, Australia’s vast outback and somewhere way back in Dale’s mind.
