Bunya Gatherings 1
Artist: Christine Williams
Medium: pen, paper cuts
Dimensions: 45cm x 32cm
Chris is a retired high school art and drama teacher. Since her retirement, she has been an active member of the Tuesday Art Group at the Gympie Regional Art Gallery for over 10 years. It has allowed her to indulge in both her loves of the local natural environment (beach and bush) and art. To highlight her narrative of “place”, Chris focuses on the minutiae of the site, especially regarding leaves, twigs, rocks, shells and tree bark. Insect-artisan sculpted leaves are actively sourced from the location because of their unique beauty and patterns.
She is also fascinated with the dynamic way leaves etc collect in gatherings which generate creative compositions of rhythm, shape and flow. Her artworks are not “landscapes”, but rather detailed site-specific “scapes” which inform the choice of colours, materials, dimensions and direction. Using a variety of papers, pens, pencils and inks, Chris developed her “paper-assemblages” as a response to the site’s individual identity and authenticity. To enhance the narrative, she sometimes includes sticks, seeds and nuts etc from the area.
Not only does she make detailed paper cut-outs, but she also creates paintings, artists’ books, cards and 3-D assemblages as personal connections with that environment.
Lately, she has been taking commissions where she designs individualized original artworks specifically relevant to the client’s place.
“The aim of art is to represent Not the outward appearance of nature, but their inward significance and beauty.” (Aristotle)
